Job Seekers

The Jobs First! program mission is to empower its participants to acheive and sustain economic self-sufficiency. The program helps individuals to obtain and maintain employment.

Jobs First! has an experienced staff with expertise in assisting individuals with employment needs. Comprehensive assessment tools are available when needed to determine appropriate placement and promote successful job matching services,

Job coaching is included within the Jobs First! program as part of the core services provided. Job coaches develop employment opportunities and coordinate activities between the employer and job seeker to help ensure job retention. Coaches are also available to assist the employer if any difficulties arise that might have a negative affect on a person's job. Job coaching can be summarized as:

Assessment of employment abilities, considering interests in job types
Coordinating a plan to overcome any barriers
Informing employers about tax credits and other benefits

Job coaches are committed to appointing job seekers to employment activities that require the same levels of time and energy as full time employment. The goal is to prepare the job seeker for the demands of the workplace.

Job coaches are dedicated to the mission that:

Participants are in the program to become employed and are expected to be successful in their job search

Case consultants work with job seekers to help overcome personal barriers to employment. Some of those services include:

Secure child care
A plan to coordinate work and family responsibilities
Budget counseling
Share information regarding available support systems and programs

Assist the participant in setting goals for long term self-sufficiency

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) has a goal to increase and retain employment, and to increase earnings of participants with enhanced job skills. Businesses and county officials administer the system. Each participant will be responsible for creating his or her own individualized employment plan, and one-stop services will help them reach their goals. This is accomplished by the use of Core, Intensive, and Training Services.

Core Services are:

Job search and placement assistance
Job listings Outreach, intake, and orientation
Follow-up services for twelve months following job placement

Intensive Services are:

Comprehensive assessments of skills and service needs
Development of an employment plan
Career counseling
Case management services
Short term pre-vocational services

The Core and Intensive Services take approximately twelve weeks to complete. If the participant along with their case manager determines a need for additional training, participants may then move on to the training phase.

Occupational skills training
On-the-job training
Skills upgrades
Customized training for an employer who commits to hiring

WIA funds will be targeted to help customers obtain skills that are high demand occupations for the county.
